public facilities

These are some of the facilities available to visitors to our island. We hope you enjoy your stay in Great Bernera!

PUBLIC TOILETS, SHOWERS AND LAUNDRY
There are public toilets at Bosta Beach, but no showers, electricity or other services. There is a public toilet at the playpark in Breaclete, one at Kirkibost pier, and toilets in the Community Centre which are available to passersby for a small donation (free for café customers, museum visitors and centre users).

There are showers in the Community Centre. Use of these showers can be arranged on request by emailing berneraca@gmail.com.

There is also a toilet, shower and laundry block at Kirkibost pier for use by patrons of the Campervan Hookups and Pontoons.

For campervan users: Note there is no chemical toilet waste disposal in Bernera—the nearest public chemical disposal point (CDP) is at Laxdale Holiday Park in Stornoway. Please do not dispose of chemical waste anywhere on our island. For more CDPs in Lewis and Harris, please refer to this map.

24/7 FUEL PUMPS
Our grant-funded and community-managed fuel pumps are located in Breaclete just before you reach the Community Centre.

There is one diesel and one unleaded petrol pump. The price displayed reflects the price on the day the fuel was purchased from Highland Fuels.

Due to the overhead and maintenance costs, it is vital that the fuel pumps are regularly used to keep this a viable service for the community.

Payment is by card only. Note that if you are paying by credit card, a sum of £100 will be deducted from your account before fuelling. Once you have completed the transaction, the difference will be refunded. Please don’t be alarmed at the £100 deduction from your credit card—you will ultimately only be charged for the amount you have fuelled. When paying by debit card, only the actual transaction amount will be deducted.

EV CHARGERS
There are two EV charging points at the Community Centre, plus two at Kirkibost pier.

PLAYPARK AND FOOTBALL FIELD
There are facilities for both toddlers and older children, as well as outdoor fitness equipment for all ages, including adults.

There is also a picnic bench and toilet, and a small car parking area in front of the park.

Although we endeavour to maintain the equipment and area to a very high safety standard, please be aware that use of the playpark and football field is at your own risk.

JOAN MACAULAY MEMORIAL GARDEN AND PICNIC BENCHES AT BERNERA BRIDGE
On the Bernera side of the bridges are three picnic benches in an enclosed area where you are welcome to take a break and enjoy the views. Parking is available next to this area.

Above the picnic benches are the Neolithic Standing Stones Callanish VIII.

And if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the elusive otters that are occasionally spotted at the bridges.
